Bug Report
Expected behavior
When i play casual or long games with my map 1600's Age of Empires, i expect to be able to play normally after turn 15.

Actual behavior
If you play with the map 1600's Age of Empires and clones/presets of them like Riddle of Steel by Your Laki after turn 15 and with minimum 3/4 players, you can't connect to the game and the chat tab shows a lot of stuff related related to this bug, mainly "error stack trace in x, y". Many guys can actually rejoin to keep paying the game but many others like me can't rejoin to it. Laki said its possible if you try many times reloading the page, but that never worked for me while playing that map in specific-

Steps to reproduce the behavior

1. Make a casual or normal game on the map with 3/4 people minimum.
2. Play till turn 15 or 20, after those turns you will see all kinds of bug related stuffs on the chat tab and you can't rejoin to play the game.

Information:
Browser: Chrome

Browser version: 99.0.4844.51 (the most recent)

OS: Windows 10

Any other relevant information:

I thinked this stuff was related to the recent bug Dave fixed related to amount of troops on the map, but it seems the bug its still on this specific map.

I tried playing the map in question for 20 turns, but didn't get any errors. Of course it might be just by chance, who knows.

Do you remember the last time it happened? If I can know what date it was, or which game it was in, maybe I can find something in the logs...

I'm sorry to hear that. It's going to be difficult for me to do anything without any steps to reproduce.... this is the single most important thing for me in any bug report.

I tried the following steps to reproduce on my own:
1) create casual game
2) choose Master of Stealth strategy
3) make a few moves, then leave
4) return to game and check strategy .... still Master of Stealth for me.

I did this twice. 2nd time I made sure that "Lucky Bastard" was my default strategy (under user profile / settings).... still it worked correctly, staying Master of Stealth after I had chosen it.

If there are some different steps to reproduce that I should try, please let me know and I'll try them. Otherwise, for now, I can't reproduce it.

For what it's worth I did check the logs, and I see where you did select Master of Stealth (note to self -- see log entry at 2022-03-12 05:10:30.8377). I also see that your default strategy is Lucky Bastard. I can't tell which strategy you actually have in the game right now. Unfortunately it won't show me what strategy you have now until the game ends.

Great Dave !!!
Now it works, I also tried a ruined map, it doesn't always manage to solve it but if you erase all the borders of the nation that has problems and recreate them then it works.

I'll do other tests anyway and if I find any problems I'll let you know

Face that I would like to make a map with the current nations I would have a request that, barring unforeseen events, would only cost you a change of RGB, you could have the inaccessible areas colored blue instead of red so you can do the great lakes of Canada, Russia , etc...

Great, glad it's working for you now

I'll go ahead and mark this bug as "fixed".

Regarding the no-go areas being red, that's another bug I already know about, which will be fixed soon...

Yes bro this

So.... the reason this is happening is because technically that map is broken. It has been broken since 2013.

When it was last saved in the Map Editor (2013-08-28) there must have been an error, because it never finished saving 100%. Specifically, the background never saved. That's why it looks all black like this:

Is this what it looked like when you last played it?

Btw I've made an update to allow "partially broken" maps like this one to continue being played, so you can try playing it again.... but I can't do anything about the missing background, sorry. We would have to get the original map author to re-upload it.

As far as game mechanics goes.... if the game lets you do it, it's legal. (I mean if it lets you without opening your browser console or hacking code -- that's different, obviously.)

We're not going to make any new rules about walls. I don't want to get into the business of judging whether one end is a few pixels too far, blah blah blah. Rewalls, serbwalls, wallfucks t1 -- so what. That's just the nature of the game.

...And for the record it's pretty clear WD didn't do anything wrong here, I'm just talking in general that we shouldn't have rules about walls to begin with. Then we wouldn't have these stupid arguments.

I just did another update of the Map Editor... could you try it again please?

I've fixed what you and WD were talking about, about what happens in Brazil, Siberia, etc etc. Of course there are still other problems, but at least the ones you described should be fixed now.

By the way, if you have an old map that is bugged with this problem you would need to Save again the map and it should correct it. But -- important -- you have to force the Map Editor to re-process the borders. Simple way to make this happen:
1) draw a new no-go zone somewhere. Could be anywhere, could be tiny, doesn't matter, just something new. This makes the Map Editor know something changed with the borders and it will have to re-process them all.
2) save the map.
3) delete the new no-go zone (you don't need it anymore).
4) save the map again. After this the map should be fixed.

Yes, our Facebook login is blocked, unfortunately. I will be removing it completely in the near future.

There's a long story but, suffice to say, Facebook is making unreasonable demands and I'm tired of them taking this approach where they shut us down first and ask questions later. It's been going on for a couple months now.

All users who have their atWar account login tied to Facebook will need to switch to using a normal username/password login going forward. I'll make an official announcement about this once I've had a chance to remove Facebook completely.

If you, or anyone else, is unable to login and can't reset your password, just send a message to our support team at https://atwar-game.com/contact/ and they'll help you out.

Well, that's definitely frustrating. I've had casual games bug out on me too, after spending like an hour making all my moves. It sucks

I don't have to tell you about atWar code though -- this will be a fun bug to try and find

I looked at the game and it does indeed appear stuck and permanently bugged... that will be in the lobby for a while I'm sure. Maybe until we move servers again!

Thanks for all the info though, I will go ahead and mark this as [OPEN] as of now and hope we find a solution someday...

Next time please be sure to follow our Bug Report Format, and if possible include a screenshot. That really helps with tracking things down.

Damn, can we just keep cwing and a admin fix the results later? we have a scenario CW log to know who actualy won a CW in the scenario discord so the clans involved can always keep the data between FO and the Empire, as well as others like the one we did with epic clan.

Atm only the 3 cws shown in the bug report are the glitched games since sid fixed the previous ones when they happened before.

Yeah that's fine you can keep CWing and I'll fix the results later.

@Sid how did you fix these before?

To the meta team: Dave will personally fire you and scrap your bread rations for this month if u don't finish the map.

At the moment, the meta team is waiting on me to fix some more bugs with the map editor, so don't be too harsh on them. There's not much more they can do until then.

I did go ahead and cut their bread rations though, because why not.

Ukraine must be freed from its current oppressive government. Anything that comes out of Ukraine is debunked within 48 hours. Oh also, I wonder why Zelensky was in the pandora papers. Any ideas?

One of my former employees was Ukrainian, living in Kiev. I remember him telling me, 2-3 years ago, how all they (the Ukrainian people) wanted was for Russia to leave them alone and stop meddling in their country. I believe him.

Say what you want about the Ukrainian government (no government is perfect), but I still don't think they deserved to be invaded.

My scenario is great. But these low ranks don't know how to host scenarios. They just host maps because they don't know what a scenario is or where they are found. This is understandable since most noobs just click on "New Game" then play whatever they see--which in this case is my map because I decided to promote both my map & scenario.

I've updated it so Promo'd scenarios will show up in the New Game menu too.

I am doing the best I can with the latest spike, as I did with the previous ones. I never let an opportunity pass by without trying.

All new accounts still get 7-days of free premium, so yes new players have access to all maps for free, at least for the first week. We implemented this during the first Coronavirus spike, and it's still in effect now.

We are continuing to advertise at the same level as we have for the last 6 months or so. I'm looking into starting up Bing ads again too.

Sean Spicer has made a pretty good Ukraine vs Russia scenario, check it out if you haven't already.

Hopefully we can release World Map 2.0 by next week... it's very close to being done, just working out a few bugs. I've been working heavily on it these last 2 weeks. It may help keep some activity going for a longer term this time. (at least I hope so...)

Okay I was able to reproduce this, thanks. Added to the list

Notes to self:
To reproduce --
1) setup a game with 2 players on opposing sides
2) for player 1, pick a city and make sure there are stealth units in it
3) for player 2, move a stack within stealth detection range of player 1's city
4) from player 2's screen, player 1's stealth units will appear in the unit hover menu, but not in the city menu

However if you think it is still a bug, please open a new bug report using the correct format. See here: HOW TO REPORT BUGS (read this first). Thanks!

If I hover over the city I can see the stealth units, but I cannot see them in the city. Seeing them in the city is useful as it shows the unit stats and description.

Thanks Clovis for following our bug report template.

Anyway what map is this happening on, so I can test?

Atwar players suggesting ideas on forums

It's true.

You might be surprised to learn though that I do read every idea that's suggested. I just don't comment on them.

There have been some really good suggestions at times; there have also been really stupid ones; and then there are some things I was already planning to do anyway. You'll never know which is which, unless/until you see the updates come out. (And for that you have to be patient... I've already got enough on my to-do list to take us through the next 3 years...)

I've just completed a big update to the map editor which I want to tell you a little bit about. In short:

- I've re-written a big portion of the code relating to how maps are saved.
- Solved a huge security vulnerability which I discovered related to map saving.
- There is now a significantly faster map saving process.
- Maximum file size for the map background has been increased from 20 to 32MB.
- Maximum file size for city/country/unit images has been increased from 1 to 10MB.
- Fixed a bunch of bugs throughout the Map & Scenario editors.

The full story, if you want to know:

About one week ago I was passing the weekend working on atWar (because, apparently, that's what I do for "fun" on the weekends). I was digging into the Map Editor code to fix a couple things the Meta Team needed related to our forthcoming World Map 2.0. While doing that I happened to discover a horrible security vulnerability which I had never noticed before. It was so bad that I immediately took down the entire Map Editor to prevent anyone from exploiting it.

Even though the vulnerability had been there for years -- definitely from before I was around -- I just couldn't conscience leaving it up after I discovered it. It's one thing when you don't know it exists, but to knowingly leave something that bad there would have been unpardonable.

The problem was part of the code that handles the saving of maps. I had been wanting to replace the map saving code for a long time anyway, for other reasons -- mostly because it was so terribly slow and inefficient. So I set out to re-write the entire map-saving functionality.

At first I thought I could do it over the weekend, but that quickly proved too optimistic as one day turned into another. I ended up working on it non-stop (except for sleep breaks) for 6 days. I literally put every other thing I had to do on hold and worked on this exclusively. I also had to cut back my goal of replacing ALL the map saving code and settle for just the most important parts of it, or else it would have taken a month and I couldn't afford to neglect my other tasks that long.

In the end though, I did replace significant portions of the map-saving code, and I'm happy to say the end result is definitely faster and more efficient. According to Mobster, a big map that used to take him 10 minutes to save, now takes only 3 minutes. For me, cloning the World Map and then saving it used to take about 2 minutes -- now about 30 seconds.

While I also fixed several bugs along the way, please note, I have NOT fixed everything. Not by a long shot. There are still plenty of other bugs floating around in the map editor, and I will keep chipping away at them as time goes by. If you happen to find one, please let me know by opening a bug report here: https://atwar-game.com/forum/topic.php?topic_id=39713. (I'm saying this now because I know there will be people who come along later and say "Dave, you said you fixed the map editor, so why am I still getting (insert bug here)??" -- I haven't "fixed the map editor", I only fixed a small part of it!)

I've also made progress on another project which I call the "Map Unbugging Project" (or the "Map Un-fucking Project", if you prefer)... I'll post separately about that soon, but suffice to say I've been going through and fixing a lot of broken maps that have been sitting around collecting dust. Keep an eye on the Map Unbugging Log for updates.

Wow, that's crazy.

Thank you WD for the screenshots. That makes it very clear.

Maybe what I need to do is add a conditional to whatever code watches the hitbox... to check if the city is a port or not, before deciding to allow a sea-based stack in. If I can find wherever that is....
