Is there any way to make buildings that do things like money or defense bonuses? All I can seem to do is make buildings that act like units, not anything like the bank or coastal battery. Thanks.

Its right there. "Building: Finances" = Bank. "Building: Recruitment" = Recruitment Center. "Building: Defence" = Fortifications. "Building: Other" = all the others.

Coastal battery is just a specialised fort and the rest is as estus said

Yeah, the only one you can't remake is Coastal Batteries.

It's possible to add a coastal battery in a limited way; as long as the coastal areas only have coastal cities.
In that case, you can limit the building to 'X' areas (the coastal areas).
