Even if I haven't experienced it personally, there still are wars around the world, that counts as knowing war to me does Irak count as a war? Spain participated with UK and USA for some selfish reason of our president (no, not land nor oil, a fucking medal for his services)

Anyway, I'd much rather start a second civil war (first one was from 1936 till 1939) than keep standing these shitty politicians which seems like they continue to live under the dictatorship. So start counting days

I wouldn't tag it as a conflict, it was a terrorist group (politically active group, but incorrect due to the use of force) and some attacks planned by them. But that's quite recent, not even 10 years have passed since their last attack, which happened to be exactly in my town.

In the sense that your own personal nation is engaged in an armed conflict involving tens of thousands of ones fellow countrymen. While the US has been engaged in a multitude of conflicts during the Cold War, there were periods of "peace" that didn't see thousands of troops dying every year, let alone foreign threats posing a serious risk to the security of ones nation. Our last ,amor conflict before 2001 was the Vietnam War with any later interventions lasting short periods of time with little casualties (like interventions in the Balkans). Probably the worst case was in Somalia but even then, the casualties were not as large as they are today.

The Second World War was a huge threat- the US had a very small military (swiss had larger forces), our navy was abysmal and an air force too small to control the skies. Our intelligence apparatus was non-existent. Our economy was in free fall and no one wanted to get involved in some European War. It was only when Japan attacked us (and then Germany declared war on us) that we began to claw our way to the top.

My point is, my parents generation can remember the '90's as a time of peace, they can remember the '80's as a cold "war" but still a certain level of peace. Today, the US is still engaged in large numbers in Iraq and Afghanistan and modern terrorism has evolved significantly since 1979 when these things became the "norm."

A war between the USA and USSR would have either lead to a nuclear holocaust or to the very least to the destruction and devastation of Europe.
